An (F)-spaceE is said to be locally midpoint constricted (in short,Imp-constricted) if there exists some δ>0 such that D(A/2)<D(A) for every subset A of E with 0<D(A)≤δ,where D(A) denotes the diameter of A.Our main result goes as follow:Let E be an Imp-constricted (F)-space and U an open connected subset of E.Assume that T:U|→F is an isometry (i.e.,a distance-preserving map) which maps U onto an open subset of the (F)-spaceF.Then T can be extended to an affine homeomorphism from E toF.Also, some other results about the question whether each isometry between two (F)-spaces is affine are obtained.

In this paper,we consider a two-parameter family of systems Eε in which Eε has a contour consisting of a saddle point and two hyperbolic periodic orbits,i.e.,the situation is similar to that described by the Lorenz equations for parameters b=8/3,Σ=10,r=r1≈24.06.For the generic unfolding Eε of Eε,we find three kinds of infinitely many bifurcation curves and establish the correspondence of the trajectories which stay forever in a sufficiently small neighborhood of the contour with symbolic systems of finite or countably infinite symbols;these results can be used to explain the turbulence behaviors appearing at the critical value r=r1≈24.06 observed on computer for Lorenz equations in a precise mathematical way.

That is, as the order n of a group G approaches infinity, the ratio of the number of hamiltonian Cayley graphs of G to the total number of Cayley graphs of G approaches1.

The study of the convergent rate (spectral gap) in the L2-sense is motivated from several different fields: probability, statistics, mathematical physics, computer science and so on and it is now an active research topic. Based on a new approach (the coupling technique) introduced in[7] for the estimate of the convergent rate and as a continuation of[4],[5],[7-9],[23] and[24], this paper studies the estimate of the rate for time-continuous Markov chains. Two variational formulas for the rate are presented here for the first time for birth-death processes. For diffusions, similar results are presented in an accompany paper[10]. The new formulas enable us to recover or improve the main known results. The connection between the sharp estimate and the corresponding eigenfunction is explored and illustrated by various examples. A previous result on optimal Markovian couplings[4] is also extended in the paper.

This paper establishes criteria for the existence and non-existence of nonzero periodic solutions of the generalized Liénard equation +g(x)=0. The main goal is to study to what extent the dampingf can be small so as to guarantee the existence of nonzero periodic solutions of such a system. With some standard additional assumptions we prove that if for a small |x|,∫±∞|f(x,y)|-1 dy=±∞, then the system has at least one nonzero periodic solution, otherwise, the system has no nonzero periodic solution. Many classical and well-known results can be proved as corollaries to ours.
